ADULT PRISONS ARE NO PLACE FOR KIDS
In an October 13 Los Angeles Times Sunday opinion piece, Vincent
Schiraldi and Marc Schindler of CJI grantees the Justice Policy Institute and
Youth Law Center argue that adult jails are no place for kids. Citing a report
by CJI grantee Building Blocks for Youth Initiative that says African American
and Latino youths are more likely to be sentenced to adult prisons than white
youths, Schiraldi and Schindler call for a "fairer and more effective youth
justice system, where there is a balance among prevention, treatment, and
punishment that gives kids a chance to make a better choice." This issue was
also the focus of an October 1 Daytona Beach News-Journal
editorial.
